Chicago

June 27-29, 1997

Hotel: The Whitehall

Restaurant Itinerary:

Friday

Pizzeria Due. Introducing the Wildings and Russinoffs to Chicago pizza was a minor goal of this trip. There had been a tentative plan to meet at Due's for lunch on Friday. Unable to locate the Russinoffs, the Wildings and Beviers went to Due's for Italian sausage and onion pizza.

Kiki's Bistro. We couldn't find the Russinoffs because they had gone to Kiki's. They reported that the spring lamb stew was very good.

The Parthenon. Everyone piled into a cab for a ride to Greek town for dinner. It had been years since the Beviers had been to South Halsted Street. It used to be dark and seedy and fun. We found it cleaned-up, well-lit and somewhat boring. We made the best of it. Dave's notes reveal that drinks included Boutari Naoussa (dry red wine) and Tsantali Ouzo. Appetizers: Saganaki, Spanakopita, Taramasalata. Entrées: Broiled Squid, Broiled Cubanelle Pepper filled with Feta, Sausage with Roasted Potatoes, Lamb with Artichokes, Moussaka, and Panfried Scallops, Cod, Squid, and Smelt, with Skordalia.

Saturday

Manny's Coffee Shop & Deli. Dave found this place listed in the Zagat guide. Susan and Lin could not face food yet. The rest of us had corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. Lots of thumbs up on this place.

Morton's of Chicago. Big bucks for big steaks. We were disappointed with the meal. This was the night of the Holyfield-Tyson fight. We learned of the outcome from people milling around on the street outside of bars.

Sunday

Pizzeria Due. We checked out of the hotel and planned to drive to Due's for lunch on our way to the airport. The hotel could not find the Wildings' van for a very long time. Five of us eventually drove over in a limo, which we think the hotel paid for. Matt showed up before the food arrived on the table. We did a sausage and onion pizza, and one with spinach.
